A History of Commitment to Environmentally Responsible Materials

Telles is a joint venture between Metabolix and Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) that uses proprietary technology for large-scale microbial fermentation to produce a versatile family of polymers known as polyhydroxyalkanoates, which Telles has branded under the name Mirel.

Founded in 1992, Metabolix, Inc. is an innovation-driven bioscience and engineering company focused on providing sustainable solutions for the world’s needs for plastics, chemicals, and energy.

Through Telles, Mirel is produced at a commercial-scale plant constructed by ADM in Clinton, Iowa. The plant is large enough to take on big customer orders, and in April 2010, it is ramping up the production of Mirel biobased and biodegradable plastic from sugar, an abundant, agriculturally produced renewable resource. The shared activities of the joint venture have included the establishment of Telles, a joint sales company, to market and sell Mirel.
