Biobased and Biodegradable. Biobased Biodegradable
Introducing Mirel Biobased Plastics

Freshwater Biodegradability

Mirel resins are the only non-starch bioplastics that are certified by Vinçotte as “OK Biodegradable Water” for biodegradability in natural freshwater environments. “OK Biodegradable Water” certified products offer practical advantages by biodegrading in water. Products that are certified as “OK Biodegradable Water” are biodegradable in a natural freshwater environment and thus contribute to the reduction of waste in rivers, lakes, and other freshwater environments.

Mirel is biodegradable in natural soil and water environments, home composting systems, and industrial composting facilities, where these facilities are available. However, like nearly all other bioplastics and organic matter, Mirel is not designed to biodegrade in landfills. The rate and extent of Mirel's biodegradability will depend on the size and shape of the articles made from it.

Marine Biodegradability
Mirel resins will biodegrade in marine environments. Mirel bioplastics meet the ASTM D7081 standard for marine-biodegradable non-floating plastics. Along with consumer education, biobased polymers that provide marine-biodegradability may help to reduce the amount of plastic waste in marine environments.
